Our Story
The latest scientific consensus views the effects of global warming and climate change to be more substantial and more rapidly occurring than previously reported. Many global leaders agree that planet earth is at a crucial crossroad. Nature is being pushed back by a rising tide of human impacts. Women and their communities are grappling with environmental issues of air pollution, food scarcity, dwindling supplies of fresh drinking water, access to land, deforestation, toxics, and the impacts of global warming. The current supply-and-demand of profit driven economics is profoundly straining natural resources.
Circle the Earth- Grassroots Women Taking Action for a Sustainable FutureTM was formed to address these pressing economic, social, and environmental issues. According to founder, Redwood Mary (Mary Rose Kaczorowski):
"It became more evident that as grassroots women advocates work for environmental sustainability, the issues of social justice, economics and peace are inextricably linked. Circle the Earth was founded based on the need to leverage change in a way that takes actions on issues impacting our social and environmental well being. We want to further grassroots women 's perspectives and expertise at all levels while respecting our earth's natural systems."
"As women work together across cultures and bio-regions, many women now acknowledge that the key to peace in their communities is recognizing and honoring the interconnections between the environment and social and economic justice."
"Circle the Earth brings an operational plan that is rooted in grassroots community-based solutions. Circle the Earth considers this as vital. The knowledge, experiences, and realities of grassroots women, who are dealing with the consequences of environmental degradation at the community level, needs to be integrated at all levels of actions and policy – from the local to the global."
Sharon Abreu, international singer/composer and environmental educator, working in partnership with Circle the Earth, adds "Grassroots women are often asked to be ultimately responsible for their communities but are under-represented in the decision-making processes. Perhaps the most important service now is to let them know that they are not alone and that they are supported in taking on leadership roles that will benefit everyone, especially the earth and the global community."
Our Values
We respect and acknowledge the fundamental importance of Mother Earth and the rights of all her inhabitants.
We are committed to the care and regeneration of our Mother Earth. Our work is based on the principles of sustainability – "the ability to provide for the needs of the world's current population without damaging the ability of future generations to provide for them".
We recognize the wisdom of indigenous peoples and we believe that the key to peace is honoring the interconnections between social, environmental and economic justice.
